Hello from Canada!
We are your homestay family and we are very happy to hear that you will be coming, JiWon. There are so many things I would like to tell you about Canada, but you will be here soon enough. I will concentrate on giving you information about our family and home so that you will feel comfortable about coming to live with us.
캐나다로부터의 안부,
지원아, 우리는 네 홈스테이 가족이고 네가 온다는 소식에 무척 행복해하고 있단다.캐나다에 관한 얘기하려면 끝이 없겠지만 우선은 네가 오기 전에 우리 가족과 집에 관해 소개하려 한다.
The first thing I should tell you is that we are doing a very large building project on our house. We are making it bigger and better, but right now there is very much construction and it will take some time to finish. Brian Chae, the Korean Coordinator, will tell you that we may not be able to live in our house until the end of September. During the building, we are living in a guest apartment that we have on our property. It is only one room and we sleep there and eat in the main house. Until we are able to move back into our main house, the Canadian Homestay Coordinator has arranged for you to live with the family that is hosting your friend, Sowon Yun. It is a family that lives near us and they are happy to have you stay with them until we can host you comfortably. I'm sorry that there is this small problem, but I cannot make the builders work any faster. We are doing a very big job and will try to be ready as soon as we can. I hope you and your family understand.
지금 우리 가족은 매우 큰 집을 짓고 있단다. 좀더 크고 좋은 집을 짓고 있어서 많은 공사가 필요하고 아직은 조금 더 마무리가 남아있단다. 브라이언 채(원장)에게 들었겠지만, 9월말까지는 같이 살기 어렵고 우리는 근처에 방 하나짜리 아파트를 빌려 지내면서 집에 와서 생활하게 된단다. 그때까지 너는 친구 소원이랑 같은 홈스테이에 있게 될 거다. 그 집은 우리집에서 가까운 거리에 있고 너를 따뜻하게 맞이 해 줄 거애. 불편하게 해서 미안하고 최선을 다해서 서두렀는데도 이게 너무 큰 일이라서 쉽지 않구나. 너와 부모님들의 넓은 이해를 바란다.
Sowon Yun's host family is very kind. We will see you each day at school and you will be welcome to come to our home and visit us each day. Our hope is that we will be ready to live in our house before the end of September. Please e-mail any questions or concerns that you have about this.
소원이의 홈스테이 가족들도 매우 친절하단다. 너는 매일 학교에서 우리와 만날 수 있고 언제든지 집으로 놀러 오는 건 환영이야. 우리 희망은 9월말 전에 집을 마무리하는 것이다. 혹시 의문이나 질문이 있으면 이메일로 알려 주렴.
Now I will tell you some things about our family. My husband and I are both teachers by profession. I have been a High School English Teacher, but am now at home raising our children. Brian has been a Woodworking Teacher, but is now running his own business building furniture and cabinetry.
우리 가족에 대해 소개할께. 나와 우리 남편은 전문분야 선생님이었단다. 나는 고등학교 영어 선생님이었지만 지금은 집에서 아이들을 키우고 있단다. 남편은 건축선생님이었단다. 그리고 지금은 가구 만드는 사업을 하고 계신단다.
We have three children. Our daughter, Brynn, is very excited about having a "sister". The boys, Ben and Jerram, are also excited about your visit. Our children are very active and all play soccer on local teams. Would you like to play soccer on Brynn's team? Brynn plays the piano and Jerram is beginning lessons in guitar. All three children are very good students. They are hard workers. They are good at sharing and are very friendly. They always try hard to make others feel welcome and included. I think you will like them.
우리는 세 자녀가 있는데 우리딸 브린은 특히 너를 자매로 맞이하는 데 대하여 매우 흥분하고 있구나. 벤과 제레미도 너가 오게 된 것을 매우 좋아하고 있단다. 우리아이들은 매우 활동적이고 지역팀에서 축구를 하고 있단다. 혹시 브린 팀에서 축구할 생각 없니? 브린은 피아노를 할 수 있고 제레미는 기타를 배우기 시작했단다. 우리 세 아이는 매우 친절하고 다른 사람을 잘 배려한단다.
내 생각에는 너도 그 애들을 좋아하게 될 것 같다.
We have a dog named Nelle. She is very good and loves children. We also have two cats, Metaxa and Maggie.
우리는 네일이라는 암강아지를 가지고 있단다. 아이들을 좋아하고 또한 두마리의 고양이 멕타샤와 매기가 있단다.
Four years ago our family moved here from the big city of Vancouver. Now we live in the country on just over 2 hectares of land. About half of the land is forest and the other half has our house, a garage with an attached apartment, and my husband¹s 185 sq. metre workshop. We live about 3 km from the children¹s school. Sometimes we ride our bikes to school, but often I drive them. Our house is about 2 km from the ocean and about 1 km from a large forested park filled with walking and biking trails. There are beaches near us: some of them are rocky and wild, but there are also some beautiful sandy beaches. We are about a 10 minute drive from both the town of Courtenay and the town of Comox. We love living in the country.
4년 전에 우리 가족은 밴쿠버 시내에서 이리로 이사를 왔단다. 지금 우리는 약 2헥타아르(2만 제곱미터) 이상의 넓은 대지의 시골에 살고 있단다.
반은 숲이고 반은 집,작은 아파트가 있는 창고, 남편의 작업실이 있단다. 학교로부터 약 3키로 떨어져 있고 자전거와 달리기를 할 수 있는 공원으로부터 약 1키로 떨어져 있단다. 가까이 해변이 있는데 바위와 거친 곳도 있지만 아름다운 모래가 있는 곳도 있단다. 우리집은 코목스나 코트니까지 차로 약 10분 정도 걸린단다.
우리는 이 시골에 사는 것을 너무 좋아한단다.
Our house was small by Canadian standards -- about 175 sq. metres. But we are now working hard to make it bigger -- about 232 sq. metres. When you come here you will share a room with our daughter, Brynn. Your bedroom will be upstairs next to Ben and Jerram's room. There is a bathroom upstairs for the children. Our bathroom and bedroom are on the main floor. When you come to live with us there will still be some construction mess, but we will have a large house and a large piece of land with swings, a treehouse and a trampoline. I hope you will enjoy it here.
우리집은 캐나다 사람들 기준으로는 작은 집으로 약175 평방미터 정도야. 그래서 232 평방 미터로 넓이고 있단다. 네가 오면 우선은 브린과 같은 방을 사용하게 될 거다. 2층에 벤과 재레미의 옆방이지. 2층에 아이들 목욕실이 있단다. 우리집 목욕탕과 화장실은 아랫층에 있지. 네가 온 후에도 당분간은 공사 때문에 정리가 안된 상태겠지만 우리가 그네와 나무집과 트램플린을 설치할 거다. 네가 좋아했음 좋겠다.
Because we live in the country, our lifestyle is a little different from many North American families. One of the jobs that the children have in winter is bringing in wood for the fire each day (we didn¹t have a fireplace in the city!) In the summer the children help in the garden and with the yard work. We don¹t spend much time watching T.V. or playing on the computer. If the children are not at school, soccer or doing homework, they are helping around the house or playing outside. Our previous Korean student, Chan Ho, loved to play outside after school. It was very different from living in an apartment in Korea.
우리는 시골에 살기 때문에 북아메리카의 기본 생활과는 다소 차이가 있단다. 그중 하나는 겨울에 매일 아이들이 나무를 날라오는 일이지(도시에서는 벽난로가 없었단다). 여름에는 아이들이 정원이나 바깥일을 돕는 것이란다. 우리는 텔레비젼이나 컴퓨터에 많은 시간을 보내지는 않는단다. 학교에 안가는 날은 축구를 하거나 숙제를 하거나 집안일을 돕거나 밖에서 논단다. 전에 있던 찬호는 방과 후에 밖에서 노는 걸 좋아했단다. 이런 생활은 아마 한국의 아파트에서 지내는 것과는 많이 다를 거야.
The Comox Valley is a beautiful part of Vancouver Island. We have mountains, lakes, rivers and the ocean. In the winter the school children have skiing lessons on Mount Washington. Sometimes in the winter we go up the mountain and go sledding. We often go camping in the spring and summer. Our family loves to canoe and kayak.There are many small islands nearby with beautiful beaches, or lakes to paddle across.
코목스는 밴쿠버 아일랜드에서 아름다운 곳이란다. 산과 호수,강 그리고 바다가 어우러져 있단다. 겨울에는 학생들은 와싱턴 마운틴에서 스키를 배운단다. 가끔은 우리도 겨울에 산에 올라 눈썰매를 타곤 한단다. 봄 가을에는 자주 캠핑을 간단다. 우리 가족들은 카누와 카약을 좋아한단다. 근처에 이것들을 탈 수 있는 많은 아름다운 해변과 호수가 있단다.
The temperatures now are about +25 - +30 degrees celcius. In the winter we have a lot of rain. It snows in the mountains above us, but we only get snow down near the ocean about 2 times each year. The winter weather in Canada can be very cold, but on Vancouver Island we have warmer temperatures than anywhere else in Canada. The daytime temperatures in winter are about +5 celcius. The rain can make it feel much colder. You will need to bring a warm winter coat, a rain coat, a hat and mittens or gloves.
지금 기온은 25도 내지 30도 란다. 겨울에는 비가 많이 내린다. 산에는 눈이 내리지만 우리가 사는 해안 근처는 1년에 한두 번 정도 내린단다. 캐나다 겨울은 원래 매우 춥지만 우리 밴쿠버 아일래드는 캐나다 그 어느 곳보다도 따뜻한 곳이란다. 겨울의 낮기온은 섭씨 5도 정도. 비가 와서 체감온도는 그보다는 조금 더 낮을테니, 따뜻한 겨울 잠바와 우의, 모자와 장갑을 가져오는 게 좋을 거야.
We have been a host family many times -- most often to Japanese students who were 16 - 22 years old. For the last school year we hosted a boy from Korea, Chan Ho, who was 11 years old. It was difficult at the beginning for all of us to learn new ways and become comfortable, but very soon Chan Ho was an important part of our family.
우리는 여러 명의 아이들을 아이들을 데리고 있어 보았단다. 특히 16세에서 22세된 일본 학생들을. 지난해에는11살인 찬호가 있었지. 처음에는 우리나 찬호나 힘들었지만 곧 적응되어 찬호가 우리 가족의 일원이 되었단다.
We have always enjoyed being a host family. It is important to us that we open our minds and hearts to other people and cultures. Our worlds are very different and many small things will seem strange and difficult. We will all work hard to help you be comfortable here. We hope you will also work hard to learn how to live in Canada and how to speak English. It will not be easy, but we will help you. We are excited that you will soon be a part of our Canadian family.
우리는 아이들을 데리고 있길 좋아한단다. 우리의 마음과 생각을 다른 사람이나 다른 문화를 가진 사람에게 보여주는 것이 중요하다고 생각한다. 세상은 매우 다른 부분이 많고 이상하게 보이거나 다른 작은 많은 것들이 있단다.
우리 모두는 지원이가 여기서 편안하게 지낼 수 있도록 열심히 도와줄 거야. 너도 캐나다에서 잘 지낼 수 있도록, 그리고 영어를 잘할 수 있도록 열심히 노력하길 바란다. 쉽지는 않겠지만 우리가 도울거야. 우리는 네가 우리 캐나다 가족의 일원이 되는 것을 매우 기뻐하고 있단다.

I have attached some photos of our family and home before the building began and one of the back of the house with the new construction beginning. There is also a photo of Chan Ho jumping off the waterfalls at a swimming place in a river near our home.
가족사진 몇 장을 첨부한다. 집 개축 시작 전에 찍은 것과 집뒤로 새로 짓기 시작하는 일부를 볼 수 있을 것이다. 찬호가 집근처 강의 수영하는 곳의 폭포에서 졈프하는 모습도 볼 수 있을 것이다.

P.S. Here is a list of some things you should bring:
- a warm coat with a rain shell; mittens or gloves; a hat; rain/snow boots.
- a backpack for school
- a lunch bag for school
- ³school shoes² that will stay at school. These should be runners.
- shorts and a t-shirt for use in gym class.
- photos of your home, family and country. We are all excited and interested to learn about you, your
family and your country.
- a swimsuit. We have a wonderful swimming pool with a water slide near us (as well as lakes, the ocean and
rivers)
- any Korean food that you like and may not be able to get here.
