12월 3일 빅토리아 여행을 다녀온 후..
코목스 현지 관리인 헤더가 홈스테이 부모들에게 보낸 편지입니다.

Hello Folks,
Just wanted to thank you again for the early delivery and late pickups for your children and to let you know how the Victoria trip went. We were so lucky with the weather....roads were good and the evening event went well without anyone being too cold.
안녕하십니까?
우선, 아이들을 모두 일찍 태워다 주시고 늦게까지 기다려 주신 점 감사드립니다.
빅토리아 투어를 다녀온 보고서를 보내 드립니다.
우선 날씨가 좋아서 길도 좋았고, 저녁행사도 춥지 않게 잘 치를 수 있어 행운이었던 것 같습니다.
The kids were terrific. We really enjoyed them....so appreciative of everything we did for them, and so happy in their relationships with each other. This is the best bunch yet! On the rating of events, the Korean restaurant and the swimming were tops, but I think they all enjoyed everything else as well.
아이들이 너무 좋아해서 보는 우리들도 흐뭇했습니다. 아이들은 모든 행사를 즐겼고 서로 잘 어울리며 행복한 시간을 보냈습니다. 아마도 지금까지 행사중 최고로 아이들을 기쁘게 해주었던 것 같습니다. 가장 좋아던 것은 한국식당에서의 식사와, 수영이었고 다른 일정들도 모두 아이들을 즐겁게 만들어 주었습니다.
The trip through the museum was a good one, as they seemed interested in everything, and a number took innumerable photos of the exhibits. The Imax show was on North American bears. They had a choice of the Miniature World or the Wax Museum, and we did rush that trip a little....but half an hour was enough to see everything.
박물관 관람에서는 아이들 모두 전시된 많은 사진 등을 둘러보며 큰 관심을 보였습니다.
또한 북아메리카의 곰에 대한 아이맥스 영화를 보았습니다. 시간이 많지 않아서 아이들은 아이맥스 영화나 미니어쳐 월드 중 선택을 해야 했지만 30분은 박물관 전체를 둘러보기에 충분한 시간이었습니다.
They ate like little piglets at the restaurant...the waiters put out a "smorg" style with two meat dishes, rice, at least four vegetable dishes and a tofu soup for over the rice. Everyone eats from the same dishes, dipping chopsticks in, eating, and then using the chop sticks again to get more food....no wonder the Asian flus travel so quickly! They had a choice of fancy ice creams for dessert and everyone got a drink.
한국식당에서는 돼지고기요리를 먹었는데 야채를 버무린 고기 두 접시와 두부 수프를 얹은 쌀밥과 4가지 이상의 야채를 곁들여 먹었습니다. 모두들 개인접시에 음식을 젓가락으로 덜어서 먹고 또 먹곤 하였습니다. 한국음식을 순식간에 해치우고 맛있는 아이스크림과 음료를 마셨습니다.
From there we drove to the Commonwealth Pool, and they had a good hour in the water and lots of time to dry hair before we left for the Butchart Gardens. Between the stars and the lights, they had quite the show there. All the way down and on the way to the gardens we heard singing, and the Twelve Days of Christmas was an oft-repeated song...the only English one, actually . Thank you all so much for drilling the kids on the twelve days thing, as they were alert and watching for and asking about each of the displays, and whenever someone saw one, there were squeals of delight.
식사를 마치고 수영장으로 직행하여 수영장에서 재미있게 놀고 머리를 말리고 뷰차드 가든으로 이동했습니다. 크리스마스를 맞이하여 준비된 많은 별들과 빛으로 뷰차드 가든은 가히 진풍경이었습니다. 내려오는 길과 가든으로 가는 길에는 음악이 흘렀고, 12일간의 크리스마스라는 영어노래가 가끔 들리곤 했습니다. 아이들에게 그 노래를 열심히 가르쳐 주신 데 대하여 감사하고 그래서 아이들은 더욱 좋아하며 모든 장식픔들에 관하여 묻고 관찰하곤 하였습니다. 누가 보면 거의 비명을 지르는 수준이었죠.
We enjoyed seeing the kids as individuals, enjoying their differences. Minji was the little mother, looking after DaSol and DaEun, glorying in her responsibility. She has matured into a gracious, attractive young teen during her stay here....and will go home with a hint of Mexico in her style! DaEun still is the giggle puss, and DaSol loved being in the middle of the trio.
우리는 아이들 한 명 한 명을 관찰하며 차이점도 느꼈습니다. 민지는 마치 어린 어머니처럼 다은이와 지헌이를 잘 돌봐주었습니다. 그녀는 여기 있는 동안 우아하고 매력적인 10대로 성장했고 약간의 멕시코 스타일도 익혀서 한국으로 돌아갈 것입니다. 다은이는 아직도 우리를 웃기는 녀석이지요. 다솔이는 그들 중 하나가 되는 것이 좋아 보였습니다.
JiHeun has changed so much over the time he has spent here...so much more friendly and confident, and he and James were the leaders in singing what sounded like Korean camp songs all the way home. What a pair! Every few miles we heard "when will we get there?"
지헌이는 여기온 이후 정말 많은 변화를 보였습니다. 예전에 비해 많이 다정해졌고 자신감도 많이 생겼습니다. 제이스와 같이 집으로 돌아오는 길에 불렀던 노래를 리드했습니다. 멋진 파트너였고 오는 도중 아이들은 몇 번이나 거기 언제 또 가는냐고 묻곤 했습니다.
We told them next Tuesday, when they had beards, after Santa Claus came etc. etc. and each exchange brought roars of laughter from them and groans from us....how do you parents stand it!!!!! JiWon and SoWon came into their own at the Korean restaurant, flirting with the admittedly attractive young owner dressed in his Korean style outfit. Sillia and HaJin were the two ten- going- on- twenty year olds in the crowd, walking arm in arm with elegant distance from the children, charmingly taking photos and inspecting everything like two little ladies.
우리는 아이들에게 다음주 화요일에는 그들이 수염이 날 때쯤엔 산타 할아버지가 왔다 갔고 모든 산타의 선물들이 웃음을 자아내고 우리에게 으르렁거리며 질타하게 될 것이라고 얘기해 주었습니다. 부모 입장에서는 어떻하신지요? 소원이와 지원이는 그들끼리 한국식당에 들어왔었습니다. 거기에는 한복을 예쁘게 차려입은 젊은 주인이 그들을 맞이 하였습니다. 실리아와 하진이는 그룹중에서 10대에 섞여있는 20대들처럼 우아하게 팔짱을끼고 아이들과 약간 떨어져 걸었고 마치 숙녀들처럼 매력적으로 사진도 찍고, 여기저기 살피면서 다녔습니다.
HeeJin was a bit more serious too, enjoying everything, but not getting too caught up in the inevitable little skirmishes. Tae Sang had a wonderful time, thrilled to be talking Korean all day long....he's a bit of a mischief and we had to keep an eye on him as he loved to stray from the beaten path. Quiet JunkYu seemed most fascinated by the museum exhibits and the wax museum displays. But he, too, had a half smile on his face most of the day.
희진이 또한 심각하게 이것 저것 신중하게 살피며 아이들의 시시한 말다툼 정도는 무관심하게 넘어가곤 하였습니다. 태상이는 하루종일 한국말을 할 수 있는 기회를 맞아 재미난 시간을 가졌습니다. 설상가상으로 그는 아무길이나 막 가보고 싶어 했습니다. 조용한 준규는 박물관 관람에 큰 관심을 보였습니다. 오늘도 역시 준규 특유의 웃음을 입가에 머금고 지냈습니다.
I think they all really enjoyed the freedom to talk in Korean, although it was amazing the number of times that English sentences got interjected into the conversation, not interrupting the flow, almost as if they didn't realize that they were all speaking English part of the time.
아이들은 모두 한국말을 할 수 있는 자유를 즐거워했습니다. 놀라운 사실은 아이들이 스스로 인식하지 못하는 가운데 영어를 섞어서 사용했다는 것입니다.
This was a long day, but as far as the kids' behaviour and expressed enjoyment level, it was a wonderful trip. Thank you to all of you for working with these children as we could clearly see that they were well prepared for the expedition and their manners were great....thank you!
오늘은 아주 긴 하루였습니다. 아이들의 행동이나 즐거워하는 걸로 보아서 그들에게도 아주 즐거운 날이였을 겁니다. 모든 홈스테이 가족들에게 다시 한 번 감사드립니다.
여러분의 덕분에 그들은 훌륭한 매너를 보여주었고 긴 여행을 잘 준비해 주셨습니다. 대단히 감사합니다.
